Tics & Tourette’s Syndrome: Understanding, Recognizing & Treating Tics & Tourette’s
What are Tics & Tourette’s Syndrome?
Tics are sudden, repetitive movements or sounds that occur involuntarily. They can be classified as motor tics (such as blinking, head jerking, or shoulder shrugging) or vocal tics (such as throat clearing, sniffing, or repeating words). When these tics persist for over a year and include both motor and vocal tics, the condition is diagnosed as Tourette’s Syndrome (TS).
Effects on Daily Life
- Social interactions: Uncontrolled tics may lead to social anxiety or misunderstandings.
- Education & Work: Difficulty focusing or the need for accommodations in school or the workplace.
- Emotional Well-being: Feelings of frustration, embarrassment, or anxiety due to tic symptoms.
- Physical Discomfort: Repetitive movements may cause muscle soreness or fatigue.
